Overview and Invitation
Natural water bodies are dynamic systems, gifted with the ecosystem components enmeshed in food chains and foodwebs, regulating the individual trophic level in control within a span of time under the normal condition - indirectly called as ecosystem services. Excessive nutrient control by the 'Constructed Wetland' (or also called as 'Rootzone ecotechnology) : The densely planted hollow reed grass in the gravel bed up to root-depth with the bottom liner, provides the action of a bioreactor in the rhizospheric biofilm when the nutrient loaded domestic or industrial sewage flows across it. The complete micro-ecosystem generated in the active gravel bed with reed stems and roots pushing air into the root-zone, regulate several nutrient removing microbiological processes, thus significantly removing nutrients from the wastewater, otherwise untreated raw wastewater dosing the receiving water body heavily with nutrients.
India made the initiation of installation of ‘Wetland Technology’, immediately after the China conference on such this theme in 1994. After this, and the follow-up biennial conferences of IWA in Austria (1996), Brazil (1998), USA (2000), Tanzania (2002) and France (2004) gave up the needed boost up for further installation of it in central India. IEMPS, Vikram University has been involved in pioneering efforts of installation and propagation of this technology at local, State and national levels. Still this technology in India seems to be in its childhood stage, and it is believed that this low cost treatment technology can have widespread utilization in thousands of small municipal towns, cities, mega cities, remote camping areas and even in private/public parks for dual purposes: treatment as well as spectacular sites supporting the biodiversity.
We invite your participation at this International Conference to be held under the aegis of Vikram Universty, IEMPS, Ujjain in November 1-7, 2008 (venue – Indore), India.
